Children of the SUn

3.29.2007

So I bought this copy of Children of the Sun at Gordy's Bike Shop. I don't even know when it was, probably 98-99 maybe... IDK... it had just came out though. SO good... Plain white sleeve with a brand new sleek black VHS inside. The label on the tape looked like it had been done with a typewriter, or at least one of those old school printers with the tear-off holes on the edges. Watched that video probably a bazillion times. I remember coming home from school and watching it a shitload before going out and riding street, sweating balls... A couple years later I moved to Flagstaff and remember Rigo Aguillar asked to borrow the video... I don't remember ever getting it back from Rigo, but when I showed up at Scott Wu's house a couple years after that, browsing through his BMX Videos, I found a copy. Our conversation went something like this: ME: "someone stole my copy" Scott Wu: "It wasn't me. I stole that one from RIGO" And I stole it back. Still have it and no one's gonna borrow it!!!

NOTE: Dan Frazer posted this up on Google and sent me the link. He and Cory Grunkemeyer did an awesome job with this video even by today's 'ivideo' standards... Dan's living in Hawaii now and does a lot of photography. Check out his flickr page here. Cory's living in Denver and runs a blog called AntiRobot.

Chandler Bikepark Opens May 5th

Sorry for not putting this all in one post but I just found this!!! http://www.chandleraz.gov/default.aspx?pageid=727 Haha. We only have to wait for 1 month for our own place that we cannont get kicked out of!!!!!

We are done at Goodyear

Unless you have been out of the loop. The Goodyear city council decided that the evil bike riders are not welcome any more at their skatepark. From what I have been told, we were blamed for everything from over crowding to causing all of the trash. I know that Los, myself, Jason, and some of the other Goodyear locals were picking up trash every night near closing. I do want to extend my thanks to the city of Goodyear for giving us the chance to ride your park. But I also want to thank you for being close minded and not looking at the entire issue. Maybe someday you will be able to follow the example that Chandler and Glendale are setting by allowing us to use their fine soon to be complete parks.

Johnny Stevens Interview

3.22.2007

I was in P-town last week with Los and was Johnny riding and it shocked me at some of the things that he was doing and KC just started an interview war. Haha j/k. So here it is the Johnny Stevens interview! Questions conducted by C-Los with Tragic Normal shit: NAME: Johnny stevens AGE: 19 HOMETOWN: Prescott valley, AZ. Years riding:8 Why don't you live in Phoenix? Because is hot and bad memories. What made you start learning opposite tricks? Because its like learning tricks all over again and no matter what hip you come to you can ride it, if its opposite or not you can do whatever. What did you think bout getting robbed at the past Skatecity contest? Aint no thing I had fun and that is all that matters. Were you trying to skip on the Denny's bill just now? Nope, just paying in change, thats the only way to do it! hahahaha What do you think bout the BMX scene in Phoenix? It's good but some people need to lighten up, enjoy BMX and stop taking it so seriously. Foot jam or foot jelly? Foot jams I really don't like jam or jelly. hahahha Do you remember the human slide in Vegas across Vegas Blvd. on new years? That was amazing I was so drunk all I remember was laying on the ground but it was so fun that night. You got a crew or some homies you like to roll with? Dustin Lane always there for me, Rodney Ordway we always have fun together, Tavis Lane (A.K.A. Baby) good style, tricks and fun to be with he is definitely stepping it up and *LOS* when am in Phoenix, he's fun to hang with and has done a lot for me. How big is it? (the quarter at Goodyear) 7ft hahahahahaha If you bought a big mac would you put some cheese on it? Yes, always Have you ever done landscaping? Nope What do you think bout the Tragic CO. video? I love video parts there way better than contests. Be on the look out for it! Does Vegas have hookers? Oh yea!!!! Do you like hookers? No, I don't want AIDS. hahahaha If you could invent a trick of the diving board what would you call it? I dunno ask me next time. Any thanks? I'd like to thank my mom and dad for always being there for me and BMX, all my friends for the support, Carlos at Tragic CO. and for everybody that pushes me since I started riding. You know who you are. No thanks? Nope Anything else? Stay with shitty cars paying for a new one sucks.

josh betley interview

ive known josh for probably 5 or so years. hes always been the kid that whatever new trick was happening.. he was one of the first to have it dialed. and now hes taken that even further and comin up w/ the hot moves. hes been getting a ton of coverage lately and has got the internet goin nuts. haha.. so heres some words.and a video video courtest of kyle carlson and yoinked from vitalbmx.com A/S/L 20 year old male living in tempe arizona. how long have you been shreddin almost half my life, 7 years favorite az spots ( without giving exact locations duh) Freestone skatepark, ditches, a couple jib jab spots by my house like some wall rides and curbs. We have really good spots, just kinda spread out. favorite dudes to ride w/ I have a couple groups I alternate riding with. My roomates, smoker drew and jeremey, shane and the kids at reed, kids from out of town. I probably should have just said everybody. you recently started spending alot more time on your front wheel. what started that? Like two years ago, nobody rode anymore, and if they did it was at the phoenix skatepark, which was horrible. So I rode by myself. It's hard to go out riding spots by yourself so I just played around in my front yard. do you think flatland inspired street riding will continue to progress.. beyond hang 5s and hang nothings? Right now nose wheelies are hot. I think that isnt slowing down anytime soon. But as far as getting really complicated flat moves on street, I dont know crazy people will get with that. I say that because a few years ago people used to do flatland runs on the deck of 1/4's and that never really caught on. People can always appreciate something that takes a lot of balance though. you also recently got hooked up w/ fit, how did that come about. That happened this year at interbike. Kyle Carlson and robbie talked about it for a little while. Robbie was interested so he wanted to meet up and talk. He told me to meet him at anthem skatepark, I was so excited to get there that i forgot about things like speed limits and cars not being able to go around turns at high speeds and damn near killed myself and a cop. Since then robbie has been hookin me up with bikes. I couldn't be happier. lately youve been blowin up on the internet. how do you feel about that? I can't complain. The internet is kinda like the new coverage in bmx. We have sites like Vital, bmxonline, the come up, fatbmx and this one that have news and videos all within a few days of the events happening and its free. But then theres all the shit talkers. That part is kinda werid. Some how some way those kids dont hate me. Thats awesome because its such a hard group to please. It's just a bummer seeing some of the stuff people say about my friends. is it wierd having people talk about you like they know you when you havnt met them once in your life? Thats something I could have never imagined happening. I had a kid tell me to my face that he rides with Josh Betley. It's werid, but flattering I guess. what are your plans for this year? travel? film? ride? All of the above! Bike riding is number one. It's not like team serious, its just thats what I love to do. I defintly plan on riding a whole bunch traveling and filming as much as i can. I have a couple projects in the works that i'm really psyked on. who do you think is going to win the az part of the local exposure tour, and be the next from AZ to "come up" hah This is a hard one. I would really like to see either Shane Reider, Alan Blackmore, Johny (dont know his last name, I just know he airs really high) or that rueben kid from douglas. All those guys are amazing bike riders with a really good attitude. But if he wanted to Jason Owens could take it no problem. what do you think is the reason for the HUGE scene in AZ? and who are your inspirations/favorites ( might be the same as your friends) I think we have a such a huge scene because we live in a large area with tons of people and year round riding. Its so awesome having so many good riders around to feed off. I'm really inspired by all the people I ride with even if its once or twice a year. I feel like I ride differnt around differnt people so its good to be always mixing it up. I really like riding with shane reider, rocky canales, bryan booye, smoker dave, drew hosselton, jeremy sawyer, eric balhman, chadwick, kc badger, sean sexton, bink, nate fleegle, derek riggs, greg litecky, jason owens, thats just a few people, all from arizona that really inspire me. if you could live any where besides here where would it be and why I would move somewhere else maybe on the east coast just for a complete change up. My family is originally from pennsylvania, seems like a differnt world everytime I go back, but in a good way. what do you do besides ride a little bike? I work at a bike store so I'm around bikes all day. I usually just hang out with my friends, watch tons of movies, pretend like i'm going to fix up my vw corrado, drink coffee, go to roller derby, listen to music and chill. any thanks? My family, my friends, fit bikes and CARLSON CO.

ryan chadwick interview

3.16.2007

i think im going to try and do a interview a month or so w/ people around the southwest. soo.. the first one is ryan chadwick. ive known ryan for a few years and hes always been real good at riding. and recently hes gotten real good at filming also. hes putting together a video for kore bike shop in tempe so i asked him a few questions about that..and other random shit. give the basics. name age location place of residence: Ryan Chadwick, 20 years old, and I currently live in a dude house in Tempe, Az. how long have you been shredding and what was your first bike. I got my first real twenty inch when I was in eight grade, so thats about 6 or 7 years. It was a 18.75" top tube Hoffman George Jr. and I was about two inches shorter than I am now, lets just say it was a little cramped. favorite spot/s I like alot of different places but PV Skatepark will always be number 1. I basically grew up riding that park and I like to think i know it inside and out. favorite people to ride with This is gonna be a long list. I'd have to say my top 3 are Sam Buros, Eric Bahlman, and Dustin Orem. All of us have been together since the start and its always great watching them progress. Each and every year they just get better and better as I get worse and worse, hahaha. Besides those three: KC Badge, Jeff Herrera, Adam Bong, J Lo, Mike Vakula, Derek Riggs, Looftop, Brandon Straubb, Bink, Billy Franevski, Sean Sexton, Tolly, Marcus, Wes and Skyler, and pretty much anyone else who enjoys riding bikes and dicking around. what do you do besides ride Right now i'm enrolled as a Film and Media Studies student at ASU. That takes up a large chunk of time. I am also well known for shading off to Flagstaff to be with my girlfriend Amy. Computers, editing, Guitar Hero, buying bongs with roomates and eating are all mixed in between there. any current projects? Right now i'm working on a video for the bike shop Kore Bike Industries, located on Scottsdale and Curry. It basically takes up all my time and I definitely quit my job to work on it full time. whos all in the video and when can we expect it to drop I am HOPING for full parts from Eric Bahlman, Zach Vogle, Mike Vakula, Derek Riggs, and Dustin Orem. Right now it's looking like a few really good mix sections, two or three full parts, and a full friends section (send me an email at chadwick4686@gmail.com if you go to kore and have something to film). Loofa is coming through with ALOT of good stuff and he might be bumped up to a full section. I am not 100% on the direction I want to take the video, but i just really want it to look and feel good, nothing too serious. worst part about filming people MOTIVATION! Hahahah. Nah. Its not that people aren't wanting to do stuff for the video, I think alot of the problems are that no one is really used to filming. Its a whole other thing to have someone be there in front of you watching everything you do with a purpose. It is distracting and difficult. I'm trying to be alot more positive with people and trying to make them more comfortable in front of the "no fun gun" as you would put it. hahha. best part Just watching my friends produce some wild tricks. People are really coming up with some good stuff. Its just real good to watch people really try and throw down when they can. Also, just knowing that this is all gonna result in a finished product and that I'll having something to show for it all, is gonna be a great feeling. favorite people to film with Eric Bahlman, Dustin Orem, and Spencer "Loofa Doofa Looftop" Lee. These three kids just want to film. Always. Some may get mad, some may throw there bikes, but all three show commitment. They fall and they get back up. They want to show people what they really can do on two wheels and its great to be around that. I'm really excited to see what they do in the last months of filming. give me a funny story Just the other day, Dustin and I went out on another filming mission. Basically this means Dustin thinking for two weeks about random stuff he wants to film and then one day we just go out and shoot it all. This particular day, some of the stuff just wasn't working right. Some spots where busts, some things just didn't look right, and some places where just completely unrideable. After getting about two or three clips, we were gonna call it a day. When out of no where Dustin remembers seeing a roof that he could drop off of. I think, a clips a clip, so we start to head to where it is at. We get to the spot and it is just the backyard of someones house. The patio has an awning that points towards a wall and on the backside of the wall is a grass bank that is barely a bank at all. So Dustin and I go up to the wall and talk about the chances. I tell him to look over and see if anybody is in the house. He refuses, saying that it might blow our chances at the clip. He tells me to set up my camera and help him lift his bike to the roof, if someone is there, let me jump off the roof, put your camera gear away, and run. I get together my things and find the angle I wanna shoot it at, hit record, and run to him. He peeks for the first time, sees no one, and climbs up the wall. I hand him his bike and run out of the shot. He jumps off the roof and jets off. I pack up and ride like the wind. I just find it funny that those people will never EVER know that two idiots decided they wanted to jump their bikes off of their roof. The clips funny too. inspirations Riding wise: Van Homan and Taj, need I say more? Filming wise: Walter Perringer, Joel Moody, Will Stroud, and others, but I like to think I mix it up and kinda do my own thing. Life wise: Sam Eric Dustin and all my friends who have always been there for me. no thanks Broken bikes. Flat tires. No money. Jobs. Buffalo Exchange. Shitty computers. Douche bags who used to live next to me. Bills. Dirty camera heads. Low batteries. School. Milk. Videos that use bangers in the promo. Bad lighting. Hyper dogs. Dirty houses. And last but not least World of Warcraft, for prolonging the video and making me fat again. thanks Mom and Dad for supporting me always with everything that I have ever wanted to do. Sam. Eric Ballzman. Dustin Orem. Everyone at the Fun Zone. Everyone who goes out to film and gives it 100%. My friends for giving me shit for never ever doing a video. Amy for being there for me even when I don't get any clips that day. Clinton for letting me go buy a bong with him. Kyle Carlson for being fat and critical. Ryan at Kore for helping me out when I needed new parts and giving me a starting point for the video. And everyone else that has helped me in one way or another with the video or anything else. You all know who you are.

broken/ boredom

since im still broken and bored. ill be doin some updates on here too.. hopefully some different stuff than news about goodyear not allowing bikes everyday. haha with that said. the last few days gary young has been in town. he got something done that alot of people have been sweating for a long time. but he was kind enough to leave it not completely destroyed. we also went to another spot that he had been thinking about for years. to run into the whole lakai skate team. it was pretty surreal to see people like eric koston, rob welsh, etc amazed by gary, even more amazing to hang out w/ skaters that were completely cool, not whining when we ( sort of ) took over the spot/session.. we can coexist!

I have a few things for you this time. First The local exposure tour is comming to AZ on Sunday April 22nd at Fort. Yes, you heard right Fort. This will mean the Fort will be open twice this year. Check the messageboard for more updates. Next, we have the now regular Goodyear up dates. First the park meeting that was to be this past monday didn't go down and was pushed back to this Monday the 5th. It will be at the same time and same place. Check the info in an earlier post if you don't remember all of the info. Try to make it out if you can. Also, as of March 9th Goodyear will change it's hours from 9am- 8pm. The park officals are saying that there is too much "mischeif" that happens after 6pm. Just something else to be brought up at the meeting this Monday. Finally the good stuff. The Chandler bike park that I checked out today. Tha tplace looks awesome. It puts Goodyear to shame from a biker stand point. Everything look 6ft plus except for a 5ft quarter. But there is no way from what I have seen that this park will be open this month as it was rumored to be. From what I have seen I give it another month or two. I couldn't get any good pictures of the back half of the park because the ground was sloped and I didn't bring my 12ft ladder. For some reason it errors evertime I try to upload the pictures I took of the park so I'll try a bit later.

Lake Havasu Park

Pat Tinnell Memorial Skatepark Last May or so I got an email concerning this and its awesome to see these guys organizing in honor of Pat. Go there and buy a t-shirt.
